The Family First approach and wider social care reforms highlight the urgent need for services that work with families rather than simply around them. Families need support that is accessible, preventative, empowering, and centred on trust, communication, and collaboration. However, despite positive changes within policy and practice, many families still face major barriers when trying to engage with services. Parents and carers are often overwhelmed by complex social care procedures, professional language and reports they do not understand, fear and mistrust of systems, emotional stress and anxiety during interventions, difficulties accessing consistent guidance and advocacy, and a lack of practical and personalised support outside statutory services. Many families want help but do not know where to turn, how to ask for support, or how to confidently participate in meetings and decision-making processes affecting their children and futures.
